In honor of the sound of a Boreal Owl I heard hooting last night, I thought I’d post this image, which I made about a year ago. This bird showed up at my feeders, looking to make a meal of a neighborhood Red-backed Vole. Boreal Owls are very small, about the size of a robin, and are not often seen. But when you are lucky enough to encounter one the owls tend not to be very skittish. This one was no exception and it allowed me to photograph from a comfortable distance for almost an hour. This species has been hooting in the night for the past month or so and will continue for a few more weeks so keep your ears open!
