Education at the Alaska Bird Observatory

3boysIn keeping with our mission and strategic plan, ABO’s education program builds awareness and enthusiasm for birds, habitats, and conservation.  Our efforts target a diverse audience of 10,000 people/year including urban and rural Alaskan communities and tourists.

As a nonprofit, community-based organization, we rely on our dedicated volunteers to help us work toward our mission.  If you are interested in volunteering, please click here.

History & Philosophy:

Our education program grew out of our bird banding station on Creamer’s Field Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, a 2,000-acre state wildlife refuge in Fairbanks, Alaska. Creamer’s Refuge provides a crucial place for our community, including thousands of school children, to interact with nature all year long.  Since 1992, at least 30,000 people have visited our bird banding station to learn about migratory bird research and conservation.  Many of these people visited as part of ABO’s school programs.  These programs at our bird banding station continue to be the core of our educational efforts.  They reflect our core ideals and mission by bringing together research and education, students, educators, and scientists to work together towards conservation in Alaska.

Our education program also includes year-round programming for adults and children, community events, an interpretive center, the Alaska Bird Camp, citizen-science projects, internships, a youth mentoring program, volunteer opportunities, and outreach.
