Youth Mentoring at the Alaska Bird Observatory

luke_box

ABO’s mentoring program is designed for youth ages 10-17 who have a strong interest in birds and ornithology.  Students work alongside professional biologists in hands-on studies of wild birds.  Our goal is to nurture students’ interests while helping them develop a lifelong conservation ethic. Participants in ABO’s mentoring program typically assist with our Tree Swallow Nesting Ecology Project at Creamer’s Refuge.  The time commitment is flexible  although is typically 5 hours/week from mid-May through early July.

Each student will receive training in handling wild birds, research ethics, and the scientific process.  Students may choose to develop their work into a project for a science fair or symposium.  Mentors provide guidance throughout this process, from developing a research question to analyzing and presenting the results. Students in our mentoring program have won awards at the District Science Fair, 1st prize in the Alaska Statewide High-School Science Symposium, and college scholarships.

Applications for our 2010 mentoring program are due by April 30, 2010.
