Resources for Educators & Parents

There is an abundance of great resources available on the web for teaching & learning about birds.  Here are some of our favorites:

Alaska Native Knowledge NetworkBirds Around the Village is a curriculum designed for grades 2-3.  It includes 8 lessons on bird identification, ecology and migration as well as traditional Athabascan uses for and stories about birds.

Bird Education Network-Includes a list of resources including websites, downloadable publications, and books related to bird conservation and education organized around 11 categories.

The BirdIQ website is “one-stop shopping” for information and educational material about birds. Includes links to posters, videos, curricula, and educational materials for adults and children.

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology is an excellent site for information on birds, bird watching, and bird research.  It includes an on-line bird guide, citizen science programs, and BirdSleuth, an inquiry-based science curriculum that engages kids in scientific study and real data collection.  Includes curriculum kits for classroom teachers as well as homeschool families.

Flying WILD, a program of the Council for Environmental Education, introduces students to bird conservation through standards-based classroom activities and environmental stewardship projects.

The International Migratory Bird Day includes bird-related activities and curriculum as well as games, art, posters, and more.  Free items are available as well!

Kid Wings is a great interactive site with resources for learning about bird physiology and ecology.  Includes downloadable games and lessons.  Home of the virtual owl pellet dissection!

The Klamath Bird Observatory has various hands-on lessons on bird physiology, ecology, & migration; bird watching, field guides, & research ; and bird conservation.  Some are specific to the Basin & Range ecosystem but are adaptable.

Point Reyes Bird Observatory-Conservation Education—Includes 11 activities for learning about bird identification and migration, using a field journal, conservation, and more.  Some lessons are specific to Californian ecosystems and conservation issues.  Others are adaptable to any locale.
