American Kestrel
(Falco sparverius)
Kestrels are a small, swallow-like falcon.
Description: A rusty back and tail and the males have blue gray wings. The head has black stripes on a white face, a blue-gray crown with a rusty center and a black beak. The feet are yellow. Kestrels are about the same size as a robin.
Food: insects, voles and small birds.
Habitat: open habitats.
Winter: Southeast Alaska, southern British Columbia and central United States.
