Fox Sparrow
(Passerella iliaca)
Fox Sparrows are the biggest sparrow we catch at the station and are easy to identify with their large beak and foxy red tail and rump. They have a unique way of kicking with both feet at the same time to move leaves and dirt away from their food.
Description: Most of their body is rusty red and gray with darker streaks on their breast and head.
Food: big bugs found in the leaf litter.
Habitat: mixed forests undergrowth.
Winter: Texas, Arizona and New Mexico.
