Chapter I
What is a Bird?
Activity 2 Life List
Objective
Students will begin their own bird species Life List to see how many birds they can collect.

Background
Bird watching is a popular activity that more and more people are enjoying. Many birders or people who watch birds have a Life List. This is a list of all the bird species they have seen during a number of years or a lifetime of birding.

Materials
paper/pencil
activity guide

Procedure
Begin your own Life List. You can use the bird checklist found on the last page of the activity book. Check the box when you have seen that bird and add others not listed at the bottom. Because it is your own life list you make up the rules. You may want to record when and where you saw it and what it was doing. This type of information makes your list more valuable when comparing it with other people's lists. Once you have filled the back page then make up a booklet of your own. Copy the birds you have already listed and then continue with new birds. Some people use the index of a field guide for their life list.

Discussion
Why do you think people would want to keep a list of all the birds they have seen? Possibly many people like to collect things and this an easy one to store. How can you add to and maintain your life list?
