Activity 3 Chatterbox
Chatterbox Chatterbox Rules
  1. Let a partner choose a word from the outside of the chatterbox.
  2. Move the chatterbox one position for each letter as you spell the word. End with the numbers showing.
  3. After your partner chooses a number, move the chatterbox as you count up to that number.
  4. Your partner then picks another number. Read the question under that number. If they can answer the question correctly they can do their chatterbox for you.
Objective
Children will construct a chatterbox, fill it with bird questions and answers and then play the Chatterbox Game with classmates. This will help them review the bird information they know and are learning. This activity could be used at any time during the unit.

Background
There is so much to know about birds. Children can use the activity guide, facts they learned on a boreal forest field trip or information they learned from other activities in this chapter and unit to come up with questions and answers.

Materials
paper/pencil
possible questions
scissors
chatterbox pattern and instructions (appendix a1)

Procedure

  1. Have children discuss possible questions they can write in the chatterbox.
  2. Construct a chatterbox by using the sample and instructions on appendices page a1 or use your own paper and make it any size.
  3. Write questions in the triangles and then play the chatterbox game.
Possible questions
-I have a beak or bill. Am I a bird?
-List three things that make me a bird.
-I am in a class called Aves. What am I?
-Name three birds.
-Name three birds that live near your house.
Possible questions using the activity guide
-I am a sparrow with one black spot on my chest. Who am I?
-My scientific name is Dendroica petechia. Who am I?
-I am a common thrush. Who am I?
-My nickname is "butterbutt." Who am I?
-Name three warblers.
-Name three sparrows.
