Chapter VI
How can we help birds?
Activity 1 Add a Chapter
Objective
Children will review the stories they wrote from Chapter IV (A Day in the Life...) and then write a concluding paragraph or chapter about the problems birds face and what we can do to help. Children will gain a better understanding about how important it is for people to protect birds and their habitat.

Background
Birds lead a fairly complicated life that is full of many challenges. Not only must they migrate, or survive long cold winters successfully, they must find enough food, raise young and avoid being eaten by other animals. There are many things that we can do to help birds. In return birds help to keep our habitat healthy.

Materials
A Day in the Life Story
pencils/paper

Procedure

  1. Review the stories you wrote previously. Think about possible changes to your story and real ways you could help your bird during the day.
  2. Write a final chapter to the day in the life of a bird. Identify the problems a bird faces every day and present ways to help birds, such as maintain a feeder, keep cats inside, clean up litter, turn in found bands, respect the habitat, and support organizations that are promoting bird conservation.
