| Why are Boreal Forest Songbirds Important? | ||
| The Boreal Forest and Songbirds Rely on Each Other. | ||
| The Boreal Forest Depends on Birds The boreal forest relies on songbirds, in part, to maintain a healthy ecosystem. Songbirds eat large quantities of insects, which prevents overpopulation and widespread forest destruction. Some songbirds eat seeds and berries and as a result play a role in spreading seeds throughout the habitat. Songbirds are a food source for other birds and animals who also make their home in the boreal forest. |
||
| Birds depend on the boreal forest Songbirds rely on the boreal forest to survive. It provides them with a habitat or a place to live that has adequate food and space. |
Food Each species of songbird that lives in the boreal forest has its own food requirements. Some birds prefer insects, others eat berries and seeds. Most songbirds feed their young insects during the first week of their life. The insect protein gives young birds the boost they need to grow and develop quickly. |
Space Although many different species of songbirds live in the boreal forest they each have their own niche or special place where they prefer to live. For example, Slate-colored Juncos live primarily on the ground where they find seeds and large insects. Savannah Sparrows like grassy areas for nesting and finding seeds. Yellow-rumped Warblers need big leafy deciduous trees where they can nest and glean insects like aphids off the leaves. Chickadees use woodpecker holes to nest and roost in. Woodpeckers live in forests where there are plenty of dead and dying trees to make holes in. |
| Activities Boreal Forest Habitat A Day in the Life... If There Were No Birds??? |
||
| What would it be like if there weren't any birds? Imagine a world without birds. If there were no birds the forest would be quieter and not as colorful. If there were no birds there would be too many insects. If there were no birds people might not have figured out how to fly. If there were no birds some famous artists may have never discovered their talent. If there were no birds many plants would have trouble spreading their seeds. If there were no birds...what do you think? |
