Conservation
We are lucky to live in the Alaskan Boreal Forest. It is one of the only places in the world where large areas have not been changed by humans. You may have heard about the serious problems the world is facing such as global warming, pollution, rainforest destruction, acid rain, and ozone depletion. There are things we can all do to help protect the world such as recycle, conserve water, put garbage in the appropriate place, and protect songbird habitat. If we protect and wisely use our environment then the earth will be healthy for many generations.
Boreal Forest Songbirds
Because the boreal forest is relatively pristine, or natural, it is important for us to protect it as much as possible. Boreal forest songbirds face many problems throughout their lives, even if their breeding habitat is healthy. There are natural factors they must face such as bad weather and predators. Other harmful things like cats, windows, pollution and loss of habitat in wintering, migration and breeding areas make it hard for songbirds to survive.
What can you do?
Cats
Keep your cat indoors. Cats will live many more years if they are kept inside where they are safe. They have a natural instinct to chase and catch birds but they don't need to eat them. By keeping your cat inside you protect the birds and your cat.
Windows
Big clean windows are wonderful for people but can be a hazard for birds. Paste a hawk silhouette on your window or hang streamers or plants so that birds can see that it is a window and fly clear.
Bird Feeders
Providing food that birds can eat helps them to survive in our habitat. It is also an enjoyable way to watch and learn about birds.
Respect
When you are in a songbird's habitat remember to respect it. You can do this by picking up litter, not destroying plants and animals that you pass, and leaving baby birds or eggs alone.
Turn in Bands
If you find a band, turn it in to the US Fish & Wildlife Service and help the study of birds.
